Through small changes, such as swapping traditional bread ingredients for faba bean flour, we can make a big difference – one bite at a time! By incorporating faba bean flour into bread production, our project aims to enhance nutritional intake across all social demographics without requiring significant changes to eating habits. Our goal is to ensure that faba bean-enhanced products not only meet nutritional and environmental goals, but also fit well into people’s lives. The focus is on integrating faba beans into staple foods, such as bread, to create more nutritious, affordable and tasty options that align with consumer preferences and dietary habits. This initiative seeks to enhance the nutritional quality of foods while also making food production more environmentally sustainable. The Raising the Pulse project led by Professor Julie Lovegrove at the University of Reading aims to change the way people in the UK eat by incorporating more pulses – specifically faba beans – into everyday diets.
The combined analysis allows us to propose a mechanistic model (Fig. 8) of drought stress perception and response in faba bean. Similar findings have been reported in faba bean and other species subjected to drought, including Asarum sieboldii . These homologies reinforce known phylogenetic relationships and reflect conserved gene functions across legumes. Altogether, the extensive list of highly regulated genes underscores the activation of multifaceted and dynamic molecular networks in faba bean, enabling the plant to cope with the physiological challenges imposed by drought. From the transcriptomic dataset, a subset of DEGs exhibiting strong regulation (log₂ fold change ≥ + 10 or ≤ − 10) under drought conditions was identified and is detailed in Supplementary Table 7. To gain insight into the biological significance of the DEGs in faba bean leaves exposed to drought, GO enrichment analysis was conducted.
Due to its adaptability to temperate and semi-arid climates, faba beans are cultivated throughout Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia and Oceania. According to the latest FAOSTAT (2023), faba bean is the sixth most produced legume crop globally. Work on genetic resources of faba bean in DOS laboratory is part-funded by the Pulse Crop Genetic Improvement Network (CH0103) project funded by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The prospects afforded by new insights into the phenotypic effects of allelic variation and the more refined biotechnological possibilities afforded by rapidly maturing genome editing technologies (Gaj et al., 2013) could potentially stimulate renewed interest in genetic transformation. Until efficient genetic transformation systems have been adopted and made available as a service, reverse genetics in the form of TILLing (Till et al., 2003) may be one of the most amenable techniques for validation of candidate genes identified via synteny-based approaches, especially if combined with powerful re-sequencing techniques to identify the causative mutations in a single step (Wang et al., 2012b). Faba bean can also be used in the bakery industry (Belghith-Fendri et al., 2016); for example, a combination of faba bean and wheat flour improves the nutritional properties of bread (Coda et al., 2017). For example, Brauckmann and Latté (2010) report that faba bean seeds contain L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), the precursor to the neurotransmitter catecholamine and a drug used to treat Parkinson’s disease. As faba bean also provide macro-, micro-, and non-nutrient phytochemicals, it has been noted to have potential as a functional food. When faba bean plants are cultivated for their dry seeds, they can be harvested using a conventional cereal combine harvester.
For all subsequent analyses of the diversity panel, except the nucleotide diversity of genetic subpopulations, a 1% MAF filter was applied to the genotype data, leaving 21,116 markers. The accessions mixed well in the PCA, showing no underlying panel structure. This left us with 787 combined accessions from the EUCLEG, NORFAB, and ProFaba panels (Fig. 3B). To establish a diversity panel of inbred lines, we removed the populations that were outbred (VICCI) or generated from a limited number of founders (seven-parent-MAGIC, four-way-cross, RSBP, GWB).
The arid and semi-arid Mediterranean climate poses a major challenge to faba bean cultivation, as the crop is particularly sensitive to water scarcity and high temperatures, both of which severely affect yield stability and performance . According to FAOSTAT , Tunisia produced approximately 75,000 tonnes of faba beans on about 54,700 hectares in 2021, with an average yield of 1.38 t/ha considerably lower than the global mean yield of 2.13 t/ha. Grain legumes occupy a central role in diversified cropping systems across North Africa, where they are frequently rotated with cereals to improve soil fertility and enhance overall system productivity.
A high proportion of TEs and their biased insertions in the genome of V. faba
The phylogenetic tree comprising EF1-α and rpb2 regions was generated by MEGA 7 based on the Maximum-Likelihood method. Isolates were cultured on PDA at 25 °C, and then 5-mm-diameter mycelia from the tip of the colony margins were placed in the center of each 90-mm-diameter Petri dish, with five replications per isolate. The pathogen was identified to genus level according to morphological traits. From 2021 to 2024, the occurrence of faba bean Fusarium wilt was estimated as 30–80% in Beibei (29°37’–30°05’ N, 106°18’–106°40’ E) and Rongchang District (29°15’–29°41’ N, 105°17’–105°44’ E) of Chongqing, China. Quality
The V3-V4 hypervariable regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene were amplified using the universal primer pair 338F (5′-ACTCCTACGGGAGGCAGCA-3′) and 806R (5′-GGACTACHVGGGTWTCTAAT-3′). Root samples were collected from both healthy and infected faba beans with severity of 3 to investigate pathogen-induced changes in the rhizosphere microbiome. For quality control (QC), 10 μL from each extract was pooled, with one QC analyzed per five samples to validate method stability.
Culinary Delights: Faba Beans in Global Cuisine
In a clinical study with healthy volunteers, pasta enriched with 35% faba bean flour maintained the same low glycemic and insulin response as standard durum wheat pasta. Beyond meat alternatives, faba bean protein shows up in protein-enriched pastas, dairy-free milks, baked goods, and sports nutrition products. High-moisture extrusion, the process used to shape plant proteins into something resembling chicken or beef, works well with faba bean ingredients. It retains more of the bean’s natural fiber and starch (about 7.5% starch), and because no chemicals or large amounts of water are involved, it’s considered more environmentally friendly.
There are many versions of this delicious dish, which is prepared in many different Middle Eastern countries. Ful medames is a popular traditional dish of the Middle East and one of the national dishes of Egypt, where it is often eaten for breakfast. Finally, I can’t possibly bring up favas in an article without mentioning my personal favorite use for the dried legumes – ful medames, also known as ful or foul mudamas, or foul mudammas. So, one of the easiest ways to add this legume to your diet is to throw the fresh pods or seeds into a soup with other fresh garden produce – just cook until the beans and other veggies are tender. Fresh pods or shellies only require short cooking times, while dry seeds need to be soaked for several hours and then cooked.
After quality control, a total of 2,682 accessions from eight different panels were genotyped for 21,345 high-quality SNP markers. Population differentiations were investigated by calculating fixation indices (FST) between pairs of subpopulations as identified by ADMIXTURE. Note that chromosome 1 was split into two parts (Chr1S and Chr1L) at position 1,574,527,093 by the faba bean genome consortium to facilitate faba data analysis. The data studied consist of 2682 faba bean accessions belonging to eight different international panels developed in different projects.
Faba bean is also susceptible to viruses, with the principal sources of infection being faba bean necrotic yellows virus (FBNYV) and bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) (Ortiz et al., 2006; Shiying et al., 2007). In a recent study conducted in Egypt, Spain, and Tunisia by Rubiales et al. (2014), some accessions and the variety “Baraca” proved to be the most resistant to O. Currently, the development of resistant faba bean varieties would appear to be the most effective strategy for preventing broomrape infestation. Dual inoculation with Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi has been reported to be more effective than inoculation with Rhizobium alone in promoting faba bean growth, particularly in alkaline soils; this reflects the existence of synergistic relationships between the two inoculants (Abd-Alla et al., 2014). Inoculating faba bean fields or seeds with Rhizobium is unnecessary in traditional cultivation areas. Nevertheless, S or K fertilizers are rarely applied, because faba bean is cultivated as a low-input crop.
